Advocacy group launches animation to empower young Queenslanders facing court

Every year, thousands of children encounter the legal system, many for the first time. Brisbane-based not-for-profit, the Youth Advocacy Centre, has today released an animated video designed to support and empower children and young people navigating children’s courts in Queensland.

The animation provides clear, accessible information to help children and young people understand what to expect when they attend children’s courts, their rights, and how to get support. In addition to reducing confusion, fear, and anxiety when facing court, it aims to empower children and young people to do everything they can to influence a positive outcome.

“Young people tell us in the lead up to court proceedings that they are anxious, overwhelmed, and aren’t clear on what court processes entail” said Damian Bartholemew, Principal Solicitor at the Youth Advocacy Centre. “It can be simple things like not knowing what to wear, through to a lack of understanding about who will be in the court room. We created this animation to help them feel prepared and supported.”

Importantly, the animation – inspired by a resource developed by the Youth Justice Legal Centre UK – was developed in collaboration with young people. They contributed during initial consultations, through illustration and animation work, voice over work, and in the final review stages. YAC also consulted youth workers, legal professionals, and sector partners including the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service (Qld) and Legal Aid (Qld). It is now available for anyone, including young people, their families, schools, courts and youth services to watch via the YAC website.

“This is about giving our young people the best possible chance,” Bartholemew said. “Having a clear understanding of your rights shouldn’t be dictated by your background or experience – all young people should know what is expected of them in court. This is a big factor in helping them get the best outcome possible.”

The animation is part of YAC’s broader commitment to increase young people’s access to legal and social justice in Queensland, and was funded by the Community Legal Education (CLE) Collaboration Fund.
