Information for Youth Workers
Referring a young person to YAC
If you need to refer a young person to YAC or would like more information on our services, contact us here.
It is best if you/the young person don’t just drop into the office because YAC workers are often out at court or visiting other young people and so may not be here when you come – but if you need to, we will do our best to help you.
Training & presentations
Laying Down the Law
Our Laying Down the Law training package is specially designed for people working or volunteering in youth work in Queensland.
Legal info presentations for young people
YAC’s Legal Education Officer and Youth Support Advocate can provide legal information to young people in range of settings – formal and informal, small groups and larger groups.
In the second half of the year, they are often invited to schools to deliver the “Party talk” (aka “Sex, Drugs, ‘n Rock’n Roll”!) in preparation for schoolies.
Legal information
Our legal information pages can be valuable for youth workers to pass on to young people.
Remember: you can only give them general legal information, not advise them on their specific legal circumstances. If they need legal advice you should help them to access a lawyer.
If you can't find the information you need you can contact us and we can look into developing new materials which answer your questions.
Our story
The Youth Advocacy Centre opened its doors in June 1981 to create a service for children caught up in Queensland's youth justice system.
Laying Down the Law
Our Laying Down the Law training package is specially designed for people working or volunteering in youth work in Queensland.
Our knowledgeable and experienced staff will educate you on the most important laws affecting youth workers and what your responsibilities are.
The training also provides participants with a decision making framework that will allow you to make decisions that are child centered, human rights compliant, and consistent with the law.
Best of all the program is interactive, including example scenarios, and questions are welcome.
